QSTVE writing is public. Email signup is optional, and you can turn off traffic measurement in this browser.

Email updates

QSTVE Weekly uses Substack for its signup form, subscriber list and email delivery. The form connects to Substack only when you choose to open it. The direct signup link also takes you to Substack.

Substack receives the email address you submit and information about that connection under its own privacy policy. Opening the form does not subscribe you. Complete the signup and confirm your email to join; use the unsubscribe link in an email to leave.

Substack’s signup form may use its own cookies, analytics and advertising services when you interact with it. QSTVE’s traffic measurement choice does not control Substack’s services.

QSTVE Weekly is separate from the existing publication subscriptions. Joining one does not automatically enroll you in the others. You can manage those subscriptions with their respective publications.

Cookie-free traffic measurement

QSTVE uses Vercel Web Analytics to understand visits to public pages. It runs automatically without a first-visit permission prompt. QSTVE no longer loads Google Analytics or creates its analytics cookies. Advertising and individual user or group identification are not used.

QSTVE sends the public page URL without query values or fragments. Only visits with an empty or origin-only referring website URL are counted; a referral carrying a page path, credentials, query values or fragment is excluded. Unknown page requests are counted as the not-found page. Newsletter form actions, email addresses, account identifiers and arbitrary campaign values are not analytics events.

Vercel receives connection information to process these requests and reports aggregate visits, referring websites, country and device/browser information. Vercel documents visitor identification using a hash from the incoming request, with visitor sessions discarded after 24 hours. Cookie-free measurement is not the same as sending no connection information.

Use “Privacy choices” at the bottom of a page to turn measurement off or on. Your choice is stored in this browser until you change it or clear browser storage. A previously saved refusal of Google Analytics remains off until you explicitly turn measurement on. Accessible old Google Analytics cookies are cleared when the QSTVE reader service loads.

QSTVE keeps measurement off when your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, when privacy preferences cannot be read, and on preview and local sites, reference tools and account pages. Turning measurement off stops further events; it does not erase data already received by Vercel. Reading and email signup work independently.

Website delivery and questions

Our hosting service processes connection information needed to deliver pages. Traffic measurement controls do not turn off that page delivery.
